Last week we got to talk about what the endocrine system is. We found out that the hormones produced by our endocrine system travel via our bloodstream. They have special, unique shapes that are only recognized by the specific tissues they are targeted for. We also know that it takes 26 seconds for what we apply to our skin to be absorbed into our bloodstream. Many of the deodorants and antiperspirants on the shelves today, have toxic chemicals that can disrupt this system. A toxic chemical described as an endocrine disruptor, acts like the hormone for the intended tissue. One of the most common hormones that is mimicked is estrogen.

When estrogen is mimicked, it can lead to cancers such as ovarian and breast cancer. . Here are the top three culprits to look out for:

  1. Parabens: These substances mimic your body’s hormones. When absorbed, they also stimulate the production of estrogen. Higher levels of estrogen can lead to breast cancer.
  2. Triclosan: Triclosan is a carcinogen that your body stores in fat cells. Exposure to it may interfere with your thyroid and disrupt estrogen works in your body. Triclosan has the potential to affect the estrogen receptors of the body. Again, increased estrogen has been found in breast cancer.
  3. Phthalates: Also a hormone disruptor. They are toxic to our reproductive system. They lower female reproductivity, lower sperm counts and can cause premature breast development in young girls.

It is down right scary to think that half of girls as young as 9 are applying this to the skin under their arms on a daily basis. When it takes 26 seconds for these substances to be absorbed into the bloodstream, no wonder the endocrine system can be disrupted so easily. It is time to demand better for our girls and ourselves. Seek out products free from these and many more chemicals.

The great news is, Evelyn Kay has none of these. Founder Jessica Benningfield has taken the guess work out of trying to find an all natural, non toxic, effective deodorant by creating Evelyn Kay. Come join the club, you will be glad you did!
